Unlike the original timid and ordinary host, the modern Leng Yue’er has no interest in relentless fighting or ambition. She chooses instead to “lie flat,” treating her role as a dark guard as a minimal job while focusing on one main hobby: watching the unfolding drama around her.
She dutifully performs basic guard duties to survive, but spends most of her time observing key events like a spectator. She watches noble families scheme and tear each other apart, a spoiled young master suffer consequences and fall into a river, princes quietly compete for power, and the novel’s original protagonists become entangled in love and conflict as the plot unfolds.
As long as her weak and sickly master remains stable, she is content to sit on the sidelines and enjoy the chaos. Occasionally, when his life is directly threatened, she steps in with precise and minimal intervention to keep him safe, never doing more than necessary.
Prince Pei Qingmin gradually notices that his dark guard is unusual. She hides perfectly in the shadows, shows unusual excitement whenever there is trouble, avoids effort whenever possible, and prefers inactivity. Yet whenever he is in danger, she always appears at the exact right moment to protect him.
Leng Yue’er herself sees no contradiction—she simply believes that watching drama is second nature, and she is only doing what comes naturally.
And if pushed too far, she may even break the storyline entirely, regardless of consequences.
